A Little Background Info on Ancestry.com:

While the name has changed a few times through the years, the history of ancestry.com dates back to the earliest days of the web. In fact, the roots of the company can be traced back all the way to 1983 and founder John Sittner – well before the internet was a reality. Thanks to the advances in technology that would come in the decades following the 80’s, ancestry.com was able to rapidly grow and expand their base of records to become the incredible resource that it is today.

Taking a look at the company as it stands in 2016, it is incredible to see what has been collected over the years. There are somewhere in the neighborhood of 16 billion records that can be accessed by users, and the user list has swelled to more than two million. The company employs more than 1,000 people around the world, and it includes a number of offshoot brands and services as well.

One of the innovative services that has been developed by ancestry.com is the ability to test a users DNA in order to more accurately create a historical perspective on their lineage. This service is provided through AncestryDNA, and it is one of the newer offerings from this business.

Ancestry.com on the Web:

Ancestry.com takes advantage of the power of social media in a number of ways, including through active Facebook and Twitter accounts. The accounts maintained by Ancestry are not as active as some of those you will see with other business accounts, but the content is often interesting in nature – especially to those interested in geology-related topics. For example, the company has posted Facebook messages with links to articles and also videos with interviews featuring people in the world of genealogy. With more than 1.5 million Facebook likes to their credit, and more than 85K followers on Twitter, it is obvious that Ancestry is doing something right from a social media perspective.

If you are already an Ancestry user and you would like to contact the company regarding a question or concern, social media seems to be a useful way to do that as well. Both their Facebook and Twitter accounts show a strong track record of replying to messages from users, so you should have luck reaching a representative in this way.

Ancestry.com on YouTube:

Another form of media that Ancestry uses for promotional reasons is YouTube. Ancestry has their own YouTube Channel which is uses on a regular basis to add content that can be enjoyed by any follower of the account. There are a number of testimonials that are posted to the YouTube channel, as well as updates on what is new on the website and even some interviews with important people such as Vice President Joe Biden. If you are at all interested in what it is that ancestry.com has to offer, keeping track of this YouTube Channel is highly recommended.

How Does It Actually Work?

Do I need to provide a DNA sample? Well, they do offer that service, but it’s not necessary. How it works is you will set up an account with Ancestry.com, and then you can start adding family members that you know to your family tree. Ancestry.com will then search it’s extensive database for records related to those family members, and start filling in more information. If they find something that they think may be related to a family member of yours it will be noted by a leaf icon on the family member. You can then click on it to view, and if it is in fact your family member you can save the information to your family tree! You can find names that you may want to search for even a family member that you didn’t know about! The more that you go through this process the more that you will find out about your family history going back further and further. It can be really fascinating to learn about your roots!

AncestryDNA Service

If you want to go really deep into your family history and ethnic background then you can opt for the AncestryDNA service, which costs a little more but can yield some really interesting results! There are many DNA research services available these days, but AncestryDNA was one of the first and is currently the leading company for DNA testing for family history. When you sign up for this service they will send you a testing kit with instructions to collect a saliva sample. Once you’ve done that you send it back to their research lab and in about 6 to 8 weeks you will receive an email with the test results. You may be surprised at the results! This is another way that you can fill in your family tree on Ancestry.com and discover family members you may have never known about otherwise. Not only will your DNA results tell you about family members that you had in the past, they will also search their database of AncestryDNA members (over 7 million people) and let you know about living relatives that you might not know about!

If you are at all worried about security, you don’t need to be. AncestryDNA uses top of the line security measures for storing both samples and DNA test result information, and you own the results of your DNA testing. After you get the results you may download them yourself and request that your saliva sample be destroyed and your test results be deleted from the database. Your information will never be shared with third parties, if you have any questions about this please refer to AncestryDNA’s privacy policy.

Unlike other DNA testing, the process that AncestryDNA uses can be taken by both men and women and will show their lineage on both the paternal and maternal sides. The technology they use is microarray-based autosomal DNA testing, if you were curious!
